The actor Joseph Jefferson made his name portraying Rip Van Winkle onstage, a part he first played in 1865 and continued in a series of international tours. He is depicted here by the artist George Waters waking from his sleep of 20 years surrounded by Catskill scenery. This print is a copy of the original 1871 painting in Historic Hudson Valley's collection.
